Oakland County’s Expert Chlorine Water Purification Company

Chlorine is something most folks in Oakland County are used to smelling in their tap water, especially after a hot shower or when filling up a glass at the sink. It’s added to kill bacteria, but that doesn’t mean you want it in your body—or in your coffee. At Water Purification Specialists, we help families get cleaner, better-tasting water without the harsh chemical extras.

What is Chlorine?

Chlorine is often added to public water systems to eliminate harmful microorganisms like bacteria and viruses that can cause illness. While chlorine is commonly known to be effective at killing bacteria in the water, it is toxic to the body and can also give the water an unpleasant smell and taste. Our home systems are a better alternative than treating your water with chlorine. Additionally, when chlorine interacts with natural organic materials in the water, it can produce byproducts called trihalomethanes (THMs), which may pose health risks if consumed over time.

Did You Know ?

According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, there is a 93% increase cancer risk for people and families that are regularly exposed to chlorinated water.

How Does Chlorine Enter Water Supplies?

Chlorine is typically introduced in controlled amounts, either as a gas, liquid (sodium hypochlorite), or solid (calcium hypochlorite), depending on the facility’s setup. While it effectively sanitises water, chlorine can remain in the supply all the way to your tap, contributing to taste, odour, and potential chemical byproducts.

Health Risks of Chlorine

Long-term exposure to high chlorine levels or chlorine byproducts (such as THMs) can contribute to respiratory issues, skin irritation, and even an increased risk of cancer.

How to Remove Chlorine from Water

Chlorine is commonly used in municipal water systems to disinfect drinking water, but its presence can affect the taste and may have health implications. There are several effective methods to remove chlorine from city water:

  • Activated Carbon Filtration: Utilizing activated carbon filters is one of the most efficient ways to eliminate chlorine. These filters adsorb chlorine molecules, significantly improving water taste and odor. They are available in various forms, including countertop units, under-sink systems, and whole-house filters.
  • Boiling: Boiling water for approximately 15 minutes can effectively remove chlorine. However, this method is more practical for small quantities of water and may not be suitable for daily household needs due to time and energy considerations.
  • Chemical Neutralization: Adding substances like ascorbic acid (vitamin C) can neutralize chlorine in water. For instance, placing a thin slice of lemon in your water introduces ascorbic acid, which reacts with chlorine, effectively removing it.
  • Reverse Osmosis Systems: These systems use a semi-permeable membrane to remove chlorine and other contaminants from water. While highly effective, reverse osmosis units can be more expensive and require professional installation and maintenance.
